Episode 40 - Inside the Fighter's Mind: Archie ‘King” Colgan on Wrestling, Fighting, and Fatherhood

The Ol' Boy Podcast's Episode 40, hosted by Chad Ward, takes us on an insightful journey into the life and career of Archie Colgan, a rising MMA fighter with an impressive 10-0 record in Bellator. Recorded in Denver's Onyx, this episode dives deep into Archie's formative years, his evolution as an athlete, and the mental grit that drives his success.

A Strong Start: Wrestling Roots and Early Influences

Archie Colgan’s journey into the world of combat sports began with wrestling, a sport he fell in love with at the tender age of four. Inspired by his older brother, Archie quickly took to the mats, finding solace and a sense of purpose in wrestling. While he dabbled in other sports like track and soccer, wrestling was the one that stuck.

By age 10, Archie knew he had a knack for wrestling, especially after placing at a state tournament. This early success was a turning point that solidified his commitment to the sport. His parents played a crucial role, encouraging him and supporting his growth, ensuring he adapted his techniques and mindset appropriately as he progressed.

Building a Legacy: High School to College

Pomona High School provided Archie the perfect environment to hone his wrestling skills. Known for its dominant wrestling program, the school has secured six consecutive state titles since Archie’s senior year in 2013, reflecting a rich tradition of excellence. During his high school career, Archie's weight classes evolved notably from 119 pounds as a freshman to 160 pounds by his senior year.

Choosing the University of Wyoming for his college career was a pivotal moment for Archie, where he wrestled in the 157-pound weight class. His tenure at Wyoming coincided with the rise of Josh Allen, whose presence substantially boosted the university's sports program's excitement and attendance. Although not achieving All-American status initially steered Archie towards wrestling, his competitive spirit found a new break in mixed martial arts, thanks to an introduction to boxing by coach Justin Salas.

Transition to Fighting: Mental Toughness and Adaptation

Archie’s transition from wrestling to fighting was marked by a blend of dedication, mental toughness, and strategic evolution. With ten professional wins within four years, joining Bellator, his growth is a testament to his relentless drive and ability to overcome mental barriers from his wrestling days. Notably, his fighting weight is currently at 155 pounds.

The modern, scientific approach to weight cutting has significantly enhanced Archie’s performance. Unlike the high school days of improper weight management, which he humorously recollects, today’s strategies ensure optimal hydration and energy conservation, facilitated by a trusted nutritionist.

Family and Team: The Pillars of Support

Balancing professional aspirations with personal life is a challenge Archie manages admirably. Supported by a tight-knit team centered around Justin Gaethje, the familial atmosphere at the gym fosters an environment where hard work and support coexist seamlessly. With two young boys growing up observing his commitment, Archie strives to set an example, emphasizing the importance of hard work and resilience.

His appreciation extends to all his team members, especially Luke, who supported his training selflessly. Such bonds underline the profound connections that sports can forge, transforming individual endeavors into collective triumphs.

Eye on the Prize: Career Goals and Fight Strategies

Archie's immediate goal is to clinch a Bellator championship within the next 12 to 18 months. An upcoming fight in London against an undefeated Brazilian opponent poses his latest challenge, bringing intense excitement and anticipation. Archie's confidence in his abilities, paired with thorough mental preparation, positions him advantageously for this clash.

A key component of his fighting strategy is maintaining relentless pressure on his opponents, a tactic inspired by training alongside legends like Kamaru Usman. By adjusting his game plan to leverage his strengths, he intends to tire out his opponents and capitalize on his conditioning, which he describes as top-notch.

Looking Ahead: Growth and Reflections

Reflecting on his journey, Archie acknowledges the critical role of mental growth in his development as a fighter. Seeing top-level professionals as regular people who face and conquer similar challenges has redefined his perspective. Training with elite fighters has instilled the belief that persistent effort and mental fortitude are paramount to success.

As Archie Colgan continues to prepare rigorously for his fights, balancing his role as a dedicated father and a fierce competitor, his story serves as a powerful reminder of the strength derived from facing challenges head-on, the unwavering support of family and team, and the unrelenting pursuit of one's dreams.
